HOME AND HAVEN is Chantal Khoury's latest ongoing series which began in 2017. It consists of paintings and drawings that explore site-specific memories of the Maritimes through a utopian lens. Motivated by a childhood in suburbia and rural surroundings, the work addresses a relationship to ‘longing’ and examines places lived, but transcends them into places dreamed. Informed by tourism catalogues and family photos, fragmented intersections and bits of now foreign places are brought to light. Selective memory dominates as details are re-filtered and re-contextualized. This narrative speaks as both ‘tourist’ and ‘resident’.
